Mercedes-Benz's mid-size GLE-class SUV has been a luxurious choice in the two-row off-roader segment since it launched as the M-class in 1998. Twenty-six model years later, Mercedes has launched the most advanced version yet: the 2024 GLE450e plug-in hybrid. This hybrid model offers much the same driving and luxury experience as its nonhybrid siblings (reviewed separately) but can drive for over 50 miles on electricity before dipping into its gasoline reserve. That's more EV miles than rivals such as the BMW X5 xDrive50e or Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid can muster. The GLE's posh cabin is lined with premium materials and upscale features, and its road manners are refined and comfortable. An available air-spring suspension provides extra ground clearance for off-roading tasks, should you dare to subject your GLE to such things, and extra comfort for daily cruising. The GLE450e's plug-in hybrid powertrain comprises a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder and an electric motor that combine for a total of 381 horsepower. That makes it slightly more powerful than the 362-hp nonhybrid GLE450. The GLE450e feels spry around town, thanks to the electric motor's instant torque delivery. The nine-speed automatic transmission shuffles gears seamlessly, helping keep the GLE450e comfortable on long cruises. Handling is more agile than expected for an SUV of this size, and the ride is comfortable. The GLE450e model comes with a 23.3-kWh battery pack, and it's rated to deliver 50 miles of range on a full charge. In our 75-mph real-world highway test, it beat that estimate with a 53-mile result. The GLE450e's cabin delivers much the same luxury experience as the rest of the lineup, with premium materials on every surface and plenty of comfort and convenience features. Dual 12.3-inch infotainment displays stretch nearly the whole width of the dashboard and offer several ways to interact with the system, including the MBUX voice recognition system. Like Apple's Siri or Google's virtual assistant, MBUX can respond to many commands.
