EV Sales and Numbers Worldwide: The Green Revolution
    Interesting Finds

The world is going through an electric-vehicle revolution for a greener, cleaner and quieter environment. Even though there are still a number of challenges that must be overcome such as charging infrastructure expansion, battery recycling solutions and upfront cost barriers, electric vehicle adoption has become a major global priority with international collaboration and relentless innovation. Countries like Norway, China, and Germany are leading the way, and the United States is also among the top countries that have significant contributions on the EV front.

    Norway:

Norway's extensive green policies have been quite comprehensive. Substantial tax exemptions and purchase incentives have yielded remarkable results and now EVs make up over 20% of all passenger vehicles on Norwegian roads. The momentum is undeniable: 80% of new cars sold there in 2023 were electric which is much higher than the global average of just 14%. Norway has also set a goal to no longer sell ICE vehicles by the end of 2025.

    China:

As the world's largest auto market, China's EV surge has reshaped the entire automobile industry. Government subsidies and a determined push by the public to combat severe urban smog have further pushed the adoption scale. China sold over 1.3 million electric cars in 2020 alone. By 2023, it dominated the global market with local EV manufacturers like BYD and accounted for over 58% of all new EV sales worldwide.

    Germany:

Home to automotive giants like Volkswagen and BMW, Germany has gone for ambitious (and challenging) electrification targets, one of which is to have at least 10 million EVs on its roads by 2030. This commitment also reflects a trend in other European countries as well where EV sales increased by an average of 137% in 2020. What drove this trend was a combination of strict emissions regulations and attractive government purchase incentives.

    United States:

The EV trend in the US is somewhat complex. Among all the states, California leads the EV adoption decisively and requires 100% zero-emission vehicle sales by 2035. The rate of adoption in other states differ significantly because of the factors like local policies and the amount of investment spent on infrastructure. The consumer interest is however growing rapidly even with this uneven growth – EV car owners in the US reached almost 1.2 million in 2023, which is a clear sign of the market change.
